Woman experiencing a dental emergencyIf you’re self-quarantining, you’re doing everything you can to stay healthy, but more importantly, you’re helping to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. However, what should you do in the case of a dental emergency? Should you risk leaving your house? Keep reading to learn the answers that can save your smile if disaster strikes during quarantine.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency?

But first, you’re probably wondering what’s considered a dental emergency. This is an oral health issue that causes pain or discomfort to the point that you can no longer focus on your normal day to day tasks. Broken, cracked, chipped, or lost teeth are all examples of emergencies, however problems like toothaches are also considered urgent. If you experience a toothache, try rinsing out your mouth and flossing around the area. If the pain persists, you should contact your dentist right away.

During the Coronavirus, dentists across the country have closed their doors to help stop its spread. However, your dentist is still ready and able to help in the event of an emergency. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, call their office immediately for treatment.

Why You Can Feel Safe to Visit Your Dentist

With the outbreak of COVID-19, the last place you want to go is the emergency room. Afterall, this is where people who potentially have the coronavirus are going. Thankfully, your dentist can help with a wide variety of dental emergencies, all in an amazingly clean and sterilized environment. Your dentist’s office has much less foot traffic, and it is expertly maintained, making it one of the safest places you could go during quarantine. Plus, you’ll be interacting with much less people than you would if you visited the ER.

When Going to the ER is Necessary

While it’s best to avoid the ER during this time, there are some cases when urgent care is necessary. If you experience uncontrollable bleeding, jaw injuries, deep facial cuts, problems that affect your breathing like infection, or any other potentially life-threatening issues, get to your local urgent care facility as soon as possible.

Staying Healthy While at Home

Dental emergencies can never be completely avoided, but there are some steps you can take to minimize your chances of one occurring, including:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each session
  • Flossing once a day to remove food and plaque
  • Adding a mouthwash to your routine for an extra layer of cleaning
  • Avoiding bad habits like tobacco use, nail biting, and excessive snacking
  • Using your teeth only for eating and speaking

During this time of uncertainty, there’s no need to worry. Your dentist is ready to help in the event of an emergency!
