Will a Chipped Tooth Heal on its Own?

Model of a chipped front toothYour teeth are protected by your enamel, which is technically hardest substance in your body. Your enamel is even stronger than some metals, but it can still break if you aren’t careful. Teeth can chip for many reasons and it’s not something you should ignore. A chipped tooth is more than an aesthetic issue. It can lead to the loss of your tooth with no treatment. A chipped tooth won’t grow back. Here’s why you shouldn’t wait to contact an emergency dentist.

A Chipped Tooth is a Dental Emergency

Your enamel is incredibly strong, but it can’t regenerate. Even if a chip is superficial and you’re not experiencing any pain, your tooth will be vulnerable to additional damage, like infections, decay, or fractures. Not to mention, if the break has resulted from an injury, there could be damage to your tooth that’s not visible above the surface. There might also be an underlying issue that caused your tooth to break, like decay, which will continue to get worse with no treatment.

If the break is minor and you aren’t having any discomfort, you can wait until your dentist’s next availability, but don’t delay treatment for too long. If the chip is significant or you’re in pain, contact an emergency dentist right away.

Managing a Chipped Tooth

While you wait to see your dentist, here are a few steps to take at home to protect your tooth:

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water to remove any debris. It will also reduce inflammation, pain, and the risk of bacterial infection.
  • Manage any discomfort with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
  • Eat soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Continue brushing and flossing your teeth.

Treating Chipped Teeth

You have several options to repair your tooth, depending on the extent of the damage, including:

  • Dental Bonding: A composite resin is shaded to the color of your enamel to blend in with your tooth.
  • Veneer: A veneer can be applied to the front side of your tooth to fix the chip. It can also improve the color and shape of your tooth.
  • Dental Crown: If the break is severe, your dentist may recommend a dental crown. The customized cap covers the entire surface of a tooth above the gum line. It will be made of all-ceramic materials to look natural.

Accidents can happen. You can lessen your risk of a chipped tooth with good oral hygiene habits and regular dental care. Wear an athletic mouthguard if you play sports. Break any bad habits that can chip your teeth, like chewing on your fingernails or using them in place of scissors. Ask your dentist for a nightguard if you grind or clench your teeth.
